"Pneumonia”
FOR AIR WEEK OF January 13, 2003

The word pneumonia conjures up images of prolonged hospital stays and oxygen tents. But in real life, pneumonia is a common infection, and if not too severe, it can be treated without a hospital stay.

Hi, I’m Dr. John Hellerstedt with the Children’s Health Minute presented by this station and TexCare—connecting Texas families with children’s health insurance for 18 dollars a month or less.

Pneumonia is a general term that refers to an infection of the lungs. Pneumonia can be caused by a variety of germs. It can begin after a cold or the flu.

Symptoms of pneumonia include fever, chills, chest pains, coughing and nausea. If your child has any of these symptoms, contact their doctor as soon as possible.

Your child’s doctor will decide if the pneumonia can be treated without a stay in the hospital.

Keep your kids healthy. Call TexCare at 1-800-647-6558 to apply or when it’s time to renew your children’s health care coverage. That’s 1-800-647-6558.
