"OCD in Kids”
FOR AIR WEEK OF January 20, 2003

All children have worries and doubts. But when your child can't stop thinking about them, she could be suffering from OCD--Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Hi, I’m Dr. John Hellerstedt with the Children’s Health Minute presented by this station and TexCare—connecting Texas families with children’s health insurance for 18 dollars a month or less.

OCD is an anxiety disorder in which the brain gets stuck on a thought or urge and can't let go. Children with OCD usually develop a repetitive behavior to cope with the obsession. For example, a child with OCD may be afraid of germs and repeatedly wash his hands until they become raw.

While it can be overwhelming for the child and the family, it should never be viewed as the child's fault.

Treatment for OCD has a high success rate and usually includes a combination of therapy and medication.

Keep your kids healthy. Call TexCare at 1-800-647-6558 to apply or when it’s time to renew your children’s health care coverage. That’s 1-800-647-6558.
