"Children and Ear Infections”
FOR AIR WEEK OF January 27, 2003

Getting the facts on childhood ear infections can make life a little less painful for the whole family.

Hi, I’m Dr. John Hellerstedt with the Children’s Health Minute presented by this station and TexCare -- connecting Texas families with children’s health insurance for 18 dollars a month or less.

Most ear infections occur a few days after the start of a cold. If your child has a runny nose or a cough and then ear pain, it may be an ear infection.

But other things may cause ear pain. In young children, teething can cause them to rub their ears, as if they hurt. And too much earwax can also cause ear pain.

Visit your health care professional if your child’s ear pain is severe, or occurs with cold symptoms. If your child has none of these symptoms, but has any ear pain that lasts for more than a day, a medical visit is still in order.

Keep your kids healthy. Call TexCare at 1-800-647-6558 to apply or when it’s time to renew your children’s health care coverage. That’s 1-800-647-6558.
