"Adolescent Depression"
FOR AIR WEEK OF May 30, 2005
Teenagers and their
mood swings are well known. But what
if their normal reaction to the
stresses of life develops into
depression?
Hi, I’m Dr. John
Hellerstedt with the Children’s
Health Minute, presented by this
station and TexCare-- connecting
families with CHIP and Children’s
Medicaid.
Genuine depression
in teens can be hard to spot because
normal teen behavior is marked by
“ups and downs”. Some signs of
depression include excessive sleeping,
a change in eating habits, faltering
school performance, even negative
behaviors like substance abuse or
shoplifting.
Never ignore the
signs of teen depression. Consult your
family physician, who may refer your
child for further evaluation and
treatment.
It’s never a sign
of weakness if your child needs
professional help with depression.
