"Meningitis”
FOR AIR WEEK OF July 22, 2002

Texas has wonderful rivers and lakes, but don’t let your children swim in warm or stagnant water this summer – it can be harmful to their health.
Hi, I’m Dr. John Hellerstedt with the Children’s Health Minute presented by this station and TexCare—connecting Texas families with children’s health insurance for 18 dollars a month or less.
Warm, slow moving bodies of water are prime breeding grounds for germs that can cause ear infections, skin irritation and diarrhea. And in some rare instances a type of germ that can cause a fatal brain infection can also be present in stagnant water. The infection occurs when the meningitis germ is forcefully inhaled, usually from diving or jumping into water.
Knowing how to pick a safe place to swim is an important part of summer water safety.

Keep your kids healthy. Call TexCare at 1-800-647-6558 to apply or when it's time to renew your children's health care coverage.
