"Cold Sores"
FOR AIR WEEK OF October 28 , 2002
No matter what you call them, cold sores or fever blisters can be a real pain for your children.

Hi, I'm Dr. John Hellerstedt with the children's health minute presented by this station and TexCare-connecting Texas families with children's health insurance for 18 dollars a month or less.

Once you get the virus that causes cold sores, you'll probably have it for the rest of your life. During times of physical stress or illness, the virus may become active and cause new sores. This virus is fairly common, but it is contagious and the sores can be uncomfortable.

Help your kids avoid getting the virus by reminding them not to share cups or silverware with anyone, especially someone with a cold sore. Sharing towels, washcloths or napkins is off limits too, because the virus can survive on fabric. And yes, it's true, kissing spreads the sores, too.

Keep your kids healthy. Call TexCare at 1-800-647-6558 to apply or when it's time to renew your children's health care coverage. That's 1-800-647-6558.
