Powerful Bones, Powerful Girls-it sounds like the latest rock band, but it's really a message about the importance of calcium and exercise for young girls.
Hi, I'm Dr. John Hellerstedt with the Children's Health Minute presented by this station and TexCare-connecting Texas families with children's health insurance for 18 dollars a month or less.
Between the ages of 12 and 19 a girl develops almost 50 percent of her bone mass, but 86 percent of girls are not getting the calcium they need for strong bones.
Low-fat milk, fruit, almonds and grilled cheese sandwiches are high-calcium foods that many kids like.
Exercise is also very important-vigorous physical play, will build sturdy bones. Get your kids to play hard and grow strong.
Keep your kids healthy. Call TexCare at 1-800-647-6558 to apply or when it's time to renew your children's health care coverage. That's 1-800-647-6558.
