"Toy Safety”
FOR AIR WEEK OF December 6, 2004

Kids and toys just naturally go together at holiday time. But how can you be sure the toys you buy are safe?

Hi, I’m Dr. John Hellerstedt with the Children’s Health Minute, presented by this station and TexCare--connecting families with children’s health insurance for 25 dollars a month or less.

Always choose toys with care, keeping in mind a child’s age, interest and skill level.

Tragically, choking is the most common cause of toy-related deaths.

Toys that CAN choke are required by law to carry warning labels, so always read labels on toy packages carefully before buying for young children. Make sure there are no small pieces your child can remove and choke on.

If you’re buying toys online, remember that some toys sold over the Internet do not comply with U.S. toy regulations.

Finally -- always keep toys for older children away from the younger ones.

Protecting children from dangerous toys is everyone’s responsibility. Call toll-free 1-877-KIDS NOW for information or when it’s time to renew your children’s health insurance. TexCare. In Sickness. And in Health.
