"Sepsis"
FOR AIR WEEK OF January 14, 2002
Any infection in
newborns or infants can be serious.
One condition doctors watch for closely
is sepsis, which can be deadly to
infants.
Hi, I’m Dr. John
Hellerstedt and this CHILDREN’S HEALTH MINUTE is presented by TexCare – connecting
Texas families with children’s health
insurance for 18 dollars a month or
less.
Sepsis is the word
doctors use to describe a very serious
infection that affects the whole body.
Sepsis is very dangerous.
Symptoms may include
fever, unusual breathing, pale or
bluish skin, listlessness, bulging
of the “soft spot” on the baby’s head
and a change in the baby’s strength.
Suspected sepsis
in newborns is treated in the hospital
with close observation and strong
antibiotics while the doctors do tests
to find an exact cause.
This is Dr. John
Hellerstedt, reminding you that no
child should be without health insurance.
