HEALTH MINUTE

"Sun Safety"
FOR AIR WEEK OF June 18, 2001
Protecting your
child from sunburn is a priority when
outdoors.
Hi, I am Dr. John
Hellerstedt and this Children's Health
Minute is presented by the TexCare
.
Sunburns
during childhood can cause early skin
aging, and can lead to skin cancer
later in life.
So
remember to always apply sunscreen
to your child's skin before going
outdoors.
Use
a sunscreen with a sun-protection
factor of at least 15. Reapply it
after swimming and after sports activities
that cause sweating.
Avoid
overexposure during the sun's peak
hours (from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in
Texas).
Seek
shade and have your child drink plenty
of fluids to prevent heat-related
illnesses. Hats and clothing
that protect from the sun are also
a really good idea.
