"Scoliosis"
FOR AIR WEEK OF July 9, 2001
Scoliosis is a
curvature of the spine caused by vertebrae
rotating and bending to the side.
Hi,
I’m Dr. John Hellerstedt and this
CHILDREN’S HEALTH MINUTE is presented by TexCare – connecting
Texas families with children’s health
insurance for 18 dollars a month or
less.
If
left untreated, scoliosis, can cause
obvious deformities of the spine.
Not
everyone with scoliosis requires medical
treatment. Never-the-less
growing children should be checked
periodically for any change in their
spinal curvature.
If the scoliosis
is minor, observation and periodic
exams might be all that’s needed. However,
if the curvature is getting worse,
your child may need to wear a brace
while they are growing to keep the
curve from getting bigger.
In
the most serious cases, surgery may
be required.
This
CHILDREN’S HEALTH MINUTE is presented
by TexCare —reminding you
that no child should be without health
insurance. Call 1-800-647-6558 to
apply.
And
join me next time for The
CHILDREN’S HEALTH MINUTE.
