"Your Child's
Cough"
FOR AIR WEEK OF December 3, 2001
When do you know
that your child’s cough is serious?
Hi,
I’m Dr. John Hellerstedt and this
CHILDREN’S HEALTH MINUTE is presented
by TexCare – connecting
Texas families with children’s health
insurance for 18 dollars a month or
less.
A cough may be serious
if your child has trouble breathing;
has a blue color to their skin; has
a high fever; is an infant who has
been coughing for more than a few
hours; makes a whooping sound or wheezing
when they breathe; or coughs up blood. If
any of these are present when your
child coughs, it is time to call your
doctor.
While
viruses cause most respiratory illnesses,
if your doctor suspects a bacterial
infection, they may prescribe an antibiotic
for the illness. Your doctor may also
recommend shower mist, a cool air
humidifier or medication to ease the
cough.
This
CHILDREN’S HEALTH MINUTE is presented
by TexCare —reminding you
that no child should be without health
insurance. Call 1-800-647-6558 to
apply.

HEALTH MINUTE.
