DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN TEXAS

ANCHOR LEAD IN:

New data about domestic violence released today reveals some shocking numbers: more than 150 women died last year in Texas at the hands of current or former intimate partners. The story from reporter Cristina Lopez.

REPORTER ON LOCATION VOICE-OVER:

On the grounds of the State Capitol today a solemn display: 153 life-sized wooden figures – so-called Silent Witnesses – each one representing a women who was killed last year in Texas by a current or former husband or boyfriend.

Texas First Lady Anita Perry joined members of the Texas Council on Family Violence launching Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is October.

Carolyn Mosley’s 15 year-old daughter was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend last year inside a high school hallway in Austin .

The National Domestic Violence Hotline – based in Texas – receives thousands of calls a month from women in abusive situations.  Research shows that three out of every four Texans know someone who is a potential victim, yet few bother to get involved. Experts say if more friends or family members stepped forward to help, there could be far fewer deaths and injuries. This is Cristina Lopez reporting.
